Day 6

Miles Hiked: 20.4
N 33.167358° W 116.543096°

Mile 70.8 to 91.2

  • Trail Conditions: 10/10 scenery - so many cactus flowers! 0/10 hiking experience - the trail drops down to the valley floor then re-ascends back into the Anzas. It was about 90 degrees with no wind, little shade, and no water between the cache at Scissors Crossing and the Third Gate. I basically hiked from juniper tree to juniper tree and tried to cram myself underneath them to cool down. Saw one rattlesnake and heard another.
  • Campsite: On top of a thriving ant settlement near the water cache. There are about fifteen people camped here, so it kind of feels like a campground. Ate my mashed potatoes in my tent to hide from the mosquitoes, but I've accidentally trapped two in with me. :(
  • People: Still no one I recognize. I'm camped with mostly older couples (40s and 50s), a large tramily of college students, and one other solo hiker.
  • Tomorrow: I'll split the remaining twenty miles between here and Warner Springs. It's supposed to be hot again, but there should be more water (cow troughs).
