Day 40

Miles Hiked: 0
Mile 624.5 to Mile 645 (McIver's Spring)
  • Trail: So much sand. I started early to make it to the second water cache at Bird Spring Rd, then climbed up the sand back into the mountains. Then, yet more sand and patchy shade from the pine trees. McIver's Spring is the first natural water since Robin Bird Spring and the last water source for this section until after Walker Pass. This section does have great views of the Sierra, including Mt Whitney, allowing hikers to look at all the snow while trudging between water sources.
  • Campsite: There's a cabin here that I thought I might stay in, but it's definitely a rodent motel. This camp is mostly used by dirt bikers/off-roaders, but the cabin seems to maybe just be used to store stuff. It does have a porch and a barbecue setup.
  • People: I met Neil and Isabelle who were already camped by the spring. I think I might've actually met them earlier on the trail, before Idyllwild, but I'm not 100%.
  • Tomorrow: Only 8.5 miles to Walker Pass! And most of it is downhill!
