Day 39

Miles Hiked: 0
Mile 603.3 to Mile 624.5
  • Trail: The Mojave is very beautiful and this is absolutely the wrong time of year to be hiking in it. Before coming down from the bluffs, there were several creeks and springs, so I took a break by Landers Creek to soak my feet and try to rinse out some of my clothes (still smell awful). Then, seven miles down into the open desert to a water cache run by Devilfish. The next cache is in 15 miles, then McIverson's Spring is 15 miles after that. Some Joshua Trees, but very little other shade.
  • Campsite: A Joshua Tree fort. It's sheltered from the wind, which is nice. Less nicely, somebody peed in the middle of it, but I kicked a bunch of sand over it. I didn't see any signs of mice, so hopefully none chew into the tent.
  • People: Pinecone and Lauren + Cameron are somewhere ahead of me, according to the trail register. I think Gummy Bears and Babyface must have camped back near the cache or are night hiking.
  • Tomorrow: An early morning to hike the 7.5 miles to the next water cache. I'll probably find a shady spot to wait out the day, then do the big climb in the evening and make it to Walker Pass by late afternoon Sunday.
