Day 26

Miles Hiked: 0
Mile 341.9 to Mile 364.4 (Guffy Campground)

  • Trail: There are some fun tunnels under the highway and train tracks after Cajon Pass, then lots of gentle but unending switchbacks as the trail climbs from 3000' to 8000'. I had hoped to go a little further and camp at Jackson Lake (372.2), but there were some very appealing shady spots and I was trying to conserve my water. I got water from a big puddle in the road near the campground (~363) but I might hike down to Guffy Spring before leaving in the morning.
  • Campsite & People: This is a pretty nice campground, with pit toilets, trash cans, and some bear lockers that got knocked/blown over and so no one is using. It has really nice sunset views. Two guys are car camping in one site and there are three or four other backpackers--so if putting my food in my tent was a bad idea, they can help chase the bear away. 😂
  • Tomorrow: The snowy part of the ascent to Baden-Powell begins around mile 377, so I'll probably reach it around late morning. Hopefully, it isn't too slushy but if it is, I can caml and try again earlier the next morning or just walk the forest service roads to gk around it.
